But they're simple and comforting, yet there's often nice touch of excitement as well. And oh man, I don't honestly know am I just having a really bad midlife crisis or what, but I've been reading a lot of children's books. So one of these current reading projects is, well, the one-and-only cat fantasy series, The Warriors ( Soturikissat, or 'Warrior Cats' in Finnish). Even amidst all the gloss, there's something quite nice and raw.īecause I'm such an over-active squirrel with my brain most of the time, I'm now reading 4 books at the same time and one old manga I bought pre-owned couple of months ago. Their life may feel distant as damn, though, with all those horses that are worth of a million living in those shiny luxurious stables that our Finnish horse-fellas can't even imagine, but it's somehow weirdly made to feel real. In the Thoroughbred series, however, the characters are written well and they feel like real people with real problems and worries, which is the part I probably like the most. I'm not very much into thoroughbred racing due to many problems it has in real life (we don't even practice this branch of equestrian sport here in Finland, we have harness racing for trotters instead) but I have to admit there's something mesmerizing about it: the insane amount of money evolved, greed for fame and success and yet in the center of all it is this love between humans and equines even though it is a big cliché. In Finnish it was called Täyttä laukkaa ('cantering in full speed' or something, not a very good name even though it describes the story quite a well). Many horse fans quite surely will know what I'm talking about: it's quite a famous horse book series from the 90s, it seems. It is called simply Thoroughbred in English, in which language the series is written originally. But one series of horse stories was especially entertaining for me, though.
