The critic Rachel Mesch, in her book Having It All in the Belle Epoque, has pointed out that ‘The Necklace’, among other stories, is a kind of Cinderella-story gone awry. For example, students are given a claim stating, 'The moral of the story is material items aren't what's important in life.' Then, students will have to extract specific evidence from the text to support this claim and justify their reasoning. ‘The Necklace’ is an 1884 short story by the French writer Guy de Maupassant (1850-93), first published in Le Gaulois as ‘La parure’ in February of that year.

Evidence Tracker: Students will gather evidence from the text to support various morals from the the story.

Popcorn Predictions: Students make and record predictions of what they think the text will be about based on receiving a strip of paper that includes 1-2 lines from the story.
